Join the Local Roots NYC Supper Club.

22 Jan

In a food rut? Awaken your taste buds and try something new with my favorite CSA, Local Roots NYC. The group holds a supper club spotlighting chefs and local ingredients. On Wednesday February 1st, the group will host their third supper club with guest chef Matthew Leif of Landhaus. Held in the beautiful exposed brick mezzanine at 61 Local, this dinner sits 30 and will feature a four course menu with ingredients from the CSA’s  farms and other neighboring farms.

The star of the show will be the apple. Each dish will show the versatility and wide range of flavors of apples, one of the few fruits that are available in the winter season. The meal will include a starter, a first course, a main course, and a dessert. Get your tickets here for an amazing meal with some good company.

Get in on a Winter CSA.

12 Nov
I am a huge fan of CSAs– especially Local Roots NYC. Joining a CSA is a great way to support small, regional farms.  Local Roots is offering a winter season, which will feature vegetables from their farmer’s greenhouses; this means spinach, kale, and swiss chard in the winter season when the season usually only brings us root vegetables. SCORE.  The shares may include everything from vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs, grain and beans, juice, cheese, and bread, all based on your preferences and all from local farms that use healthy growing practices with pick-up right in the neighb.
One of my favorite parts of Local Roots is that it’s a little different than other CSAs. Their unique model is designed to offer greater convenience, product variety, value, and payment flexibility, and has been called the New Generation of CSA because of this.  The winter season runs from December-February with members paying upfront for 12 weeks as opposed to the 24 weeks in other CSAs.  Membership applications are due November 27, 2011 for locations in Carroll Gardens and Boerum Hill.  This is one of the few CSAs in New York City that will be providing fresh local vegetables – not frozen – during the winter season, so make sure to get your application in as early as possible!  Information on products, farms, and how to sign up can be found here.

I was a part of the Local Roots NYC CSA over the summer, and I was thrilled to see that they are holding a Pop Up CSA for Thanksgiving. They’ll be curating a delicious Thanksgiving dinner sourced from all New York Farms. You can pick up Turkey, Vegetable, Fruit, Baking, and Bread shares, all from farms utilizing healthy growing practices, of course.  Veggies include Sweet Potatoes, Potatoes, Broccoli, Squash, and Celery. Pick up locations are in Carroll Gardens and Boerum Hill. Can’t make it? Delivery options are also available to Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. And you don’t even have to be a member! Applications are due October 28. Visit their website for more info.

After participating in the Summer share, I can tell you that I can’t recommend Local Roots CSA more. The produce is always summer fresh and delicious, and the staff is more than helpful. Visit the website to sign up and get more info.

First Day of Local Roots CSA

7 Jun

Today was the first pickup day for the Local Roots CSA. I grabbed my goods at 61Local at 61 Bergen Street. The super-fresh veggies came from The Rogowski Farm in Warwick, NY, with an offering of spinach, radish, scallions, and nettle this week. The CSA also has eggs, bread, meats, grains, and fruit– and everything looks so good! For more about Local Roots visit the website here.

New CSA Launches with Three Brooklyn Pickup Locations

5 May

A new multi-farm CSA is coming to Brooklyn, giving you a whole new way to get local goods. The shares may include everything from seasonal vegetables, fruits, duck, beef, eggs, grain and beans, and bread, all based on your preferences and all from regional farms that use healthy growing practices– all at one location!

So what makes it different than other CSAs? It’s unique model is designed to offer greater convenience, product variety, value, and payment flexibility. The summer season runs from June – August with members paying upfront for 12 weeks as opposed to the 24 weeks in other CSAs. Membership applications are due May 23, 2011 for locations in Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Williamsburg, and Tribeca.  Information on products, farms, and how to sign up can be found at www.localrootsnyc.org.

Get ready for one of my favorite parts… one of the pickup locations will be one of my FAVORITE bars in Brooklyn, 61Local. 61Local will even host a fundraiser dinner on Monday May 9th. Chefs Cathy Erway, author of The Art of Eating In, and Noah Berland will cook a four course family style meal with ingredients sourced only from participating Local Roots CSA farmers.  Ticket information and full menu can be found here.
