Where to Eat Right Now: Joya

24 Aug

Attention curry-enthusiasts! If you haven’t tried Joya, run to 215 Court Street right now and place your order. The candlelit atmosphere, modern art, and exposed brick walls might make you feel like you are dining at an upscale, trendy eatery, but without the upscale prices. The priciest entree is only $7.95, and appetizers fall between $2.95 and $4.95– seriously. Try the Fried Tiger Shrimp Rolls or the Spicy Noodles with chicken or shrimp in a basil sauce, but don’t leave without ordering curry. I recommend the “Kang Koong,” or shrimp and eggplant, bamboo shoots, peppers and carrots in a red coconut curry sauce.

On top of the delicious and low-priced menu, the restaurant also offers a garden in the back of the restaurant if you prefer dining al fresco (for the few warm nights left at least!). The only possible downside is that because of the exposed kitchen, the restaurant can get a bit loud, but if you like a buzzing atmosphere, this spot is perfect. The staff is quick to serve, my dish was on the table in less than 15 minutes.

Joya is cash only, so hit up the ATM before you visit, and make sure to sip on a minty mojito while you’re there.

**UPDATE!**

A new Joya location is coming to Fort Greene at 723 Fulton Street at Fort Greene Place this fall!

Bicycle Update

6 Aug

It’s been a couple weeks since I bought my fabulous vintage bicycle on Craigslist, so I thought you deserved an update. I’ve been riding the streets of Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Dumbo, and even Red Hook, and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. As you can see in the photo, I can even ride with my eyes closed. One issue– I still need a helmet. Any suggestions on where to get a semi-attractive one?

Mediterranean On Smith

23 Jul

Restaurants are popping up every day on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill. Broken English opens today at 68 Bergen Street (right off Smith), and a new Mediterranean place is set to open soon at 213 Smith near Baltic. Check out the signage below!

Celebrate Bastille Day in Brooklyn!

14 Jul

I’m still waiting for someone to buy me a trip to France. Until someone steps up, I can only dream… and celebrate Bastille Day like the French right here in Cobble Hill! This Sunday July 18th, Smith Street will be covered in sand for a giant petanque tournament (which is like the French version of bocce).

Bistro Bar Tabac will be the epicenter of the event, offering $5 anise-flavored cocktails, a selection of $6 wines, $6 sandwiches, and of course, French fries!  Eighty teams from around the world will compete in the tournament, but only one will leave with the coveted trophy. On top of the games, drinks, and food, participators can also enjoy live music.

Join the festivities from 11am to 10pm, and if you are interested in buying me that trip I’m open to negotiations.

Drink like a Brooklyn-er

26 May

Even if you don’t live in Brooklyn, you can still drink like you do. Spike Lee has teamed up with Absolut to create a Brooklyn tribute beverage, “Absolut Brooklyn.” A former resident of Cobble Hill, Lee designed the brownstone label on the bottle and the apple-flavored alcohol. The bottle will cost you about $24.99, but Absolut will be donating a portion of the proceeds to Habitat for Humanity in hopes of building more affordable housing in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Want a cocktail? Visit Michael Towne Wine and Spirits on Henry Street, not far from my new apartment!

The Promise Land

22 May

I wanted to be cool and buy antique furniture for my Victorian-looking apartment. After scouring several small antique shops (Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill have a ton!) I realized the prices really diminished the cool-ness. Where can you find a giant warehouse full of cheap furniture in Brooklyn? IKEA!

Ikea’s power is so strong that they even have a shuttle at the Smith and 9th Street station to cart people over all day. If you haven’t been yet, GO. It’s massive; especially for a store in New York, where everything is usually sized down. Table and chair set? $99. Tall wooden table for the kitchen? $99. Four piece knife set? $2.99. The store overflows with wall art, kitchenware, bedding, furniture, and even random things that I never thought I would need like a wall shelf for the bathroom.

One piece of advice? DON’T get the delivery service; it’s pretty expensive and you have to wait in line forever. Instead, Ikea has cars that will come pick you and your items up and bring you right to your door. The Brooklyn Heights car only costs $16; and compared to the $90 delivery charge, that’s fabulous.

Take a look at our new table and chair set for our window nook below, and get out to IKEA now.
