Cure your Croissant Craving at Bien Cuit

25 Aug

There’s nothing like freshly baked bread (or cookies, pies, tarts…), and luckily for those near Smith Street, Bien Cuit is serving up some delicious baked goods.

The charming cafe with exposed brick and French-inspired decor is the perfect spot to grab an afternoon coffee and croissant. Try the Basque Turnover (a Lagrima Olive Oil Infused Puff Pastry with Peach and Txakoli Custard), the Almond Pear Danish, Chocolate Croissant, or the Basil Blueberry & Lemon Meringue tart.

Visit Bien Cuit at 120 Smith Street in Cobble Hill. Just be careful– once you go in, you won’t be able to leave without snacking on something.

Where to Eat Right Now: Van Horn Sandwich Shop

28 Apr

Van Horn Sandwich Shop is new to the Cobble Hill neighborhood, just opening a few months ago. If you haven’t stopped in to grab a bite, I suggest you run over there right now if you haven’t had dinner yet (it’s open until 11pm). The menu offers unique, Southern-inspired sandwiches and sides like cornmeal battered catfish, North Carolina Style BBQ pulled pork, and my favorite– the Sweet PLT, or smoked sweet potato, lettuce and tomato. Make sure to try the Mac & Cheese, baked with parmesan, cheddar and breadcrumbs, and the hushpuppies too.

The eatery’s style is simple and comfortable, with light wood tables and exposed brick. The long wooden bar is inviting, serving up local brew like Kelso and Sixpoint. Visit Van Horn at 231 Court Street, and view the whole menu here. Try not to eat your hand while you read it.

Van Horn Sandwich Shop Open For Business

1 Feb

In Cobble Hill and hungry? Try the new Van Horn Sandwich Shop at 231 Court Street. The eatery serves up classic sandwiches with a Southern flair, like  buttermilk fried chicken, cornmeal breaded catfish, and a Sweet PLT– or sweet potato, pimiento cheese, lettuce and tomato on a pullman loaf. Van Horn has beer on tap too– including Brooklyn’s Kelso and Six Point. Visit their website for a full menu and more details on their story!

Your New Stumptown Spot

30 Jan

You’ve probably heard me rave about Stumptown Coffee before, as its my favorite NYC coffee brand and I can’t help it. When I want to buy my own to brew at home, I usually head to Iris Cafe or Choice Market to buy my bag, but I found a new Stumptown spot– Cafe Pedlar. An adorable artisanal coffee joint at 210 Court Street, Cafe Pedlar offers a wide selection of Stumptown bagged beans, with flavors like Hairbender and Holler Mountain (my choice).

Need a snack to go with your brew? The cafe serves up baked goods like apple tarts, chocolate chip cookies, and pretzel braids. The spot is owned by the owners of Frankies Sputino, Merlin Merchant, and Prime Meats, so you know it’s good. Visit Cafe Pedlar’s website here, and check them out on Facebook too.

Sipping at Strong Place

18 Jan

Need a casual go-to bar with a gastropub menu and a massive beer/wine/cocktail list? Head over to Strong Place at 270 Court Street in Cobble Hill. The bar is semi-new to the neighborhood, just opening this past summer, but they are already a staple to Court Street eaters and drinkers. The meaty menu includes dishes like Grilled Lamb Burgers, East Coast Oysters, and Crispy Duck Leg Confit, as well as snacks to pair with a beer, like cajun boiled peanuts and deviled eggs.

I’m usually wary of bars with TV’s (there tends to be a lot of shouting and “bro-ing”),  but this one didn’t bother me one bit. It’s casual without being dive-y or too sports-centric, catering to many different drinking audiences. And even if your company is sucked in by a sports game, the atmosphere is enough to entertain.

Buy a Thanksgiving Pie

19 Nov

If you’re into baked goods, you MUST try Sweet Melissa Patisserie in Cobble Hill. For the Thanksgiving season, they are serving up a festive selection of pies, like the Fresh Ginger Custard Pumpkin Pie, the Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie, and their Famous Apple Pie with a buttery cinnamon crumble.

Not into the holiday pie thing? Go for one of their other delectable desserts. Try the Caramel Apple Bread Pudding (my fave), the Lemon Meringue Tarts, or a Hot Fudge Peanut Brittle Sundae! Visit Sweet Melissa at 276 Court Street and fantasize about their menu here.

Where to Brunch Right Now: Cafe Luluc

17 Nov

If you’re looking for brunch in the Cobble Hill area, make sure you add Cafe Luluc to your must-try list. A French restaurant best known for their amazing breakfast/brunch, Cafe Luluc serves up some of the best egg dishes around. One piece of advice? Get there early. If you leisurely wake up at noon and take a stroll over, you’re going to have to wait in a line of hungry Brooklyn brunchers– not pretty.

I recommend going for the spinach and goat cheese omelet, the open-faced Western omelet, or the French Toast with apple compote. You’ll feel like you’re dining alfresco in a Paris bistro, with the cobblestone-like flooring and French-inspired decor.

Visit Cafe Luluc this weekend at 214 Smith Street, and don’t forget to top your meal off with one of their warm and creamy lattes!

A Friday Cocktail

The Sweet Liberty Smash at Henry Public

It’s Friday. It’s Labor Day Weekend. I think you need a drink. For a perfectly concocted cocktail, visit my new favorite drink spot, Henry Public. The restaurant/bar has an antiquey old fashioned feel and a relaxed atmosphere, while still maintaining a trendy vibe. The unique drink menu includes “The Sweet Liberty Smash,” or bourbon, mint, sugar, blackberries, and paychaud’s bitters ($10), as well as the “Brooklyn Ferry,” a mix of rye whiskey, antica vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and absinthe ($11).

Hungry? Henry Public has a meat-filled menu with offerings like Marrow Bones with Toast, Fresh Oysters, and various hamburgers. For non-meat-eaters, order the cheese plate. I vote the “three fine cheeses” as the best cheese plate I’ve ever had, and aside from the cheese, includes crispy bread, smoked almonds, and a black raspberry jam.

Visit Henry Public tonight at 329 Henry Street.

Brucie Coming to Court Street

26 Aug

New (and cute) signage shows that a new restaurant called Brucie will be opening in the ex-Cube 63 spot on Court Street near Baltic Street. Brownstoner says Brucie will be an Italian market and restaurant– which means more Italian for Cobble Hill. I guess we can add that to the list with Bocca Lupo, Sam’s, Mama Maria’s, Broken English, Lunetta, etc. etc.
