ALL DAY Thanksgiving Party this Weekend

15 Nov

My favorite Brooklyn bar 61Local is throwing another unique event that I’m so excited for– an all day Thanksgiving party on November 19th 1pm to 11pm. They’re going raffle crazy with prizes from Red Hook Winery, Saxelby Cheese Mongers, Brooklyn Soda Works, KBBK Kombucha, BK Farmyards, Cut Brooklyn, Brooklyn Brine, Oslo Coffee, Mast Brothers Chocolate, and more. Plus, they’ll all be in house to chat.

The raffle proceeds will go to support their good friend Carlo Scissura for his campaign for Brooklyn Borough President. 61Local has a close relationship with Carlo, as he helped the bar make progress in opening when they had some delays, because Carlo believed in their cause. Carol also helped many food and beverage companies get affordable commercial space.

Here’s the schedule:

1pm: They break out the Kings County Special – a beer and bite combo sourced from you guessed it… Brooklyn!  Purchase raffle tickets for gift baskets filled with Kings County products and take some local goodness home.

6pm – 8pm: Meet + Greet session with Carlo on the mezzanine to answer questions and talk about how he is involved with local production, small business and building the Brooklyn community. (Email contact@61local.com for details.)

8pm: Brooklyn’s first “Orange Wine” from Red Hook Winery goes on-tap.  This northern Italian specialty was crafted in the new world facility of Brooklyn’s Red Hook Winery and contains all the love and character that the old world intended.  Sample this unique wine and meet Christopher Nicholson from the winery.

10pm: Raffle prizes are drawn and everyone’s a winner! (Redeem any raffle ticket for a ½ price Brooklyn made craft beer or wine.)

See you there.

Celebrate Autumn at 61Local

8 Oct

I’m always so excited to see 61Local’s latest events. Not only are they an awesome bar, but they are also have amazing community space with cool and creative events all the time. I’m particularly pumped about the Autumn Festival on October 16th.

Here’s your chance to sample the bounty of late summer/fall at 61’s Autumn Festival of fermented delights!  They will be serving hearty plates of house-made sauerkraut, potato bread from Bien Cuit, and  a variety of sausages from Brooklyn CuredSchaller & Weber and Dickson’s Farmstand Meats and a wide selection of Fall Beers, like Captain Lawrence Pumpkin Ale, Brooklyn Brewery Post Road Pumpkin Ale, Victory, Festbier Märzen, and Ramstein Oktoberfest Lager.

For  a $12 ticket at the bar, you get an ample plate of food including two kinds of sauerkraut, potato bread, three sausages and plenty of mustard. The Autumn Festival begins at 12pm and wraps up when they run out of food.  No advance tickets to buy, just show up at the door.

See you there.

Kick off the Fall with a Beer-Pairing Gala

9 Sep

On Sunday, September 11, Slice Literary is hosting their second-annual family style beer-pairing dinner at one of my favorite Brooklyn bars, 61 Local. Sixpoint head brewer Ian McConnell and local food guru Joe Scalora have crafted a delicious autumnal menu to kick off the month.

All proceeds will support the print and publication of Slice, and will help new writers have their voices heard.

Come for dinner, and make sure to stay for drink specials at the bar. Sixpoint has donated beers from their limited inventory that will be on tap at a special discount exclusively for this event. Get your tickets here; it sounds like the perfect way to start the Fall season.

Swap your Homemade Goods at 61Local

26 Aug

Are you a cook, baker, canner, or brewer? Head to the BK Swappers event at 61 Local on September 8th 6:30-9pm. You can swap anything that you make yourself, whether it’s jams, pickles, kombucha, candies, bread, cookies, syrups, infused liquors or oils, sauces and salsa, anything! A few people who keep chickens and bees will also be there with plenty of locally laid eggs and Brooklyn-cultivated honey.  61Local suggests portion sizes between 4–16 oz, depending on the cost of the materials involved.

All you need to do is bring 3-5 items (though some people bring more, some less), which can range from a jar of jam you put up a few months ago to a loaf of bread you baked that day. The swapping itself is a friendly and casual barter transaction. You will make in-kind trades with other swappers and leave with as many items as you came with.

Pint Mash Up Recap

16 Aug

As you may have read in a previous post, two of my favorite NYC businesses 61Local and Steve’s Ice Cream united to create the ultimate Pint Mash Up party! From 11am through 1am on Saturday, the 61Local and Steve’s teams scooped ice cream samples, served up beer floats, and gave out fabulous prizes. Check out my photos from the event in the slideshow below.

Ice Cream + Beer = Pint Mash Up Party

4 Aug

Two of my favorite NYC establishments are coming together in a perfect food & drink marriage– Steve’s Ice Cream and 61Local are teaming up to bring you a Pint Mash Up Party! That means the fabulous craft ice cream and craft beers will come together to create amazing new flavors like Beer Pretzel Caramel, Maple Porter Pecan, and Bklyn Blackout.

Mark your calendars. On August 13th, the day kicks off at 11am with a Steve’s Ice Cream pop-up ice cream stand at 61Local. Steve’s will be serving Ice Cream Floats (yes, I said it) made with all things on tap, PLUS scoops and ice cream sandwiches. To make it even more exciting, you’ll have the chance to win gift baskets full of local stuff like local goodness like Cut Brooklyn, Mike’s Hot Honey, Liddabit Sweets, Ovenly Bar Snacks, The Stand Syrup, Anarchy in a Jar Jam, Brooklyn Butcher Block and KBBK Kombucha.

THEN from 6pm to 1am, they will serve up free samples of those new flavors I mentioned. You’re invited, so come on down! I. Can’t. Wait.

The Brooklyn Event Hot Spot: 61Local

17 Jun

61Local is one of my favorite bars in Brooklyn and luckily for me (and you) they have many exciting events coming up this month worth checking out.

June 18th (tomorrow!): It’s “Total Smith Street Immersion” and 61Local is getting in on the action. During The Total Smith St. Immersion from noon to 6pm, you’ll find specials at over 20 shops, bars, and restaurants on Smith St. 61 Local will offer one complimentary pint of the Brooklyn Weisse and give you a chance to spend some quality time in their gorgeous bar!

June 19th: The author of The Art of Eating In, Cathy Erway will be hosting a CSA Benefit Dinner on the 61Local Mezzanine. The tickets are $25, and includes delish dishes like Kimchee-Stuffed Pork Roulade, Duckfat-Roasted Potatoes, and strawberry-rhubarb shortcake. Get your tickets here.

June 20th: Brooklyn Cured founder Scott Bridi will teach a class about making basic charcuterie at home, specifically Country Pate and Smoked Pork Rillette. 61Local is offering a beer tasting to accompany the charcuterie plate– local beers, of course. Tickets are $45, and you can buy them here.

June 25th: Celebrate the year anniversary party for Barrier Brewery at 61Local, with plenty of beer and a jumbo sized submarine sandwich. Very fitting for the nautical theme.

Can’t make it to the events, but still want to check out 61Local? I definitely recommend heading over there this weekend for a drink!

First Day of Local Roots CSA

7 Jun

Today was the first pickup day for the Local Roots CSA. I grabbed my goods at 61Local at 61 Bergen Street. The super-fresh veggies came from The Rogowski Farm in Warwick, NY, with an offering of spinach, radish, scallions, and nettle this week. The CSA also has eggs, bread, meats, grains, and fruit– and everything looks so good! For more about Local Roots visit the website here.

New CSA Launches with Three Brooklyn Pickup Locations

5 May

A new multi-farm CSA is coming to Brooklyn, giving you a whole new way to get local goods. The shares may include everything from seasonal vegetables, fruits, duck, beef, eggs, grain and beans, and bread, all based on your preferences and all from regional farms that use healthy growing practices– all at one location!

So what makes it different than other CSAs? It’s unique model is designed to offer greater convenience, product variety, value, and payment flexibility. The summer season runs from June – August with members paying upfront for 12 weeks as opposed to the 24 weeks in other CSAs. Membership applications are due May 23, 2011 for locations in Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Williamsburg, and Tribeca.  Information on products, farms, and how to sign up can be found at www.localrootsnyc.org.

Get ready for one of my favorite parts… one of the pickup locations will be one of my FAVORITE bars in Brooklyn, 61Local. 61Local will even host a fundraiser dinner on Monday May 9th. Chefs Cathy Erway, author of The Art of Eating In, and Noah Berland will cook a four course family style meal with ingredients sourced only from participating Local Roots CSA farmers.  Ticket information and full menu can be found here.
