Sausage + Pickles + Beer = Your May 2

21 Apr

If you haven’t heard by now, 61Local has an awesome class series featuring local Brooklyn artisans called Meet Your Maker. The next event in the series is May 2, 7-9pm, and it’s all about beer, sausage and pickles. And who better to teach the class than a head brewer from Kelso, the founder of Brooklyn Cured, and the founder of Brooklyn Brine?

Of course, you can’t learn without tasting, so there will be plenty of beer, sausage and pickled veggies to try. BONUS… 61Local is donating the funds to Brownsville Student Farm Project, and the project will even be there to tell you a little bit about it.

Get your tickets here; it’s going to be a unique event.

Happy Birthday Local Roots!

11 Apr

My favorite CSA, Local Roots NYC, is one year old! Celebrate the birthday with me on April 17th at 7pm at 61Local.

They will also be celebrating their new artisanal Brooklyn share which debuts this summer. There will be a carrot shaped pinata (!!!) filled with goodies from some of the purveyors of our Brooklyn share: jerky from SlantShack and caramels from Liddabit Sweets!

As always, 61 Local will have some great wines and beer on tap. There will be a beer-cocktail making station to make micheladas and shandies. Cupcakes will be provided by Ovenly, another purveyor for our Brooklyn share. Could it be more awesome? I don’t think so. See you then!

It’s time to meet your makers.

22 Mar

I hope you’re not sick of hearing me rave about upcoming 61Local events. I can’t help it– they’re all so fabulous, I have to share. So here’s the next one. The Meet Your Makers tasting series starts in April. They’re collaborating with some extraordinary brewers, mongers, and ice cream makers. Plus, it’s for a good cause. Proceeds from the tasting series will be donated to the Brownsville Schoolyard Farm Project, a new urban farm.

At each tasting, guests will be presented with a selection of pairings in order to judge the best pairing for themselves. Founder and head brewer from Kelso of Brooklyn, Kelly Taylor will be at every tasting to tell you about his fine brew and what his favorite pairings are. The winning pair from each tasting in the series will be presented at the finale evening in July.

Here’s the schedule.

April 4, 7-9pm

Kelly Taylor of Kelso and Saxelby Cheese Mongers pair a selection of brews and Hudson Valley cheeses.

May 2, 7-9pm

Kelso, Brooklyn Cured and Brooklyn Brine Co. taste Kelso beers along with a selection of Brooklyn’s finest cured meats and pickled veggies

June 6, 7-9pm

Kelso of Brooklyn and Phin & Phebes. It’s time for beer and artisan ice cream floats!

July 11, 7-9pm Finale Tasting

No blue ribbons, just winning flavors. 61 Local brings back the pairings voted best by each tasting group for a round-up grand finale meal.

Celebrate a Year of the Folding Chair

17 Mar

On April 3rd from 7-9pm, head to 61Local to celebrate the one year anniversary of The Folding Chair reading series with words, art, music and libations. Hang out with cool people like poet Cathy Park Hong, visual artist Mores McWreath, and poet and novelist Ben Lerner, while enjoying live music and sipping on local brews.

In usual 61Local fashion, the night will celebrate all things local, with a special TFC brew menu that includes generously donated drinks from Kings County Distillery, Red Hook Winery and local brewers Jared Greenfield and Austin Haase. There will also be anniversary pie from Four & Twenty Blackbirds, a limited edition poster designed by artist Graham Parks and generously printed at Kayrock Screenprinting, and a door prize donated by Cut Brooklyn.

Learn to Butcher a Fish.

6 Mar

I tend to order the fishiest dish when possible, whether that’s salmon, mahi mahi, halibut, grouper, or bass, but I have no idea how to butcher the fish myself. Thanks to Local Roots CSA, I have the opportunity to change that. On Monday March 26th, you can learn and practice fish butchery on high-quality fish at 61Local.

Each student will butcher a fish from start to finish, with two fish to practice on from Pierless Fish, a Brooklyn based fish provider which many of the top NYC restaurants source from. Then, bring your perfectly cut filets home to show off to your friends. Learn more here and sign up.

Brew, Beer, & Bonbons Meetup Recap

2 Mar

Tasting the treats from Phin & Phebes, Brewklyn Grind, and No Bake Makery

Thank you to all of you Brooklyn bloggers, writers, techies, and tweeters who came out to 61Local on Wednesday for the Brew, Beer, and Bonbons meetup. I loved having the opportunity to introduce you to some of my favorite Brooklyn things, like Brewklyn Grind Coffee, No Bake Makery‘s non-baked treats, and Phin & Phebes ice cream. The turn out was even larger than I expected, and I’m so glad 61Local provided us with the awesome venue, as well as plenty of local beer and wine.

I was excited to meet some of the people that I tweet with in person, and catch up with others. If you couldn’t make it to this meetup, keep following me for updates on the next one. And please make sure to check out all three of the vendors– I rave about them for a reason.

I can't get enough of this coffee. You have to try it.

You’re Invited. Brew, Beer, & Bonbons: A Brooklyn Meetup

18 Feb

If you love Brooklyn as much as I do, I’d love for you to join me at my latest Brooklyn meetup, Brew, Beer, & Bonbons at 61Local on February 29th at 7pm. One of my favorite coffee roasters, Brewklyn Grind, will be there offering samples of their delicious brew and No Bake Makery will have non-baked treats for the perfect pairing. As usual, 61Local will be serving up their selection of local beer and wine.

I decided to combine three of my Brooklyn faves to create the ultimate meetup experience. I start my mornings with Brewklyn Grind coffee, and I know you’ll want to too once you try a sample. And what better to pair with a good coffee than sweet treats? I can’t get enough of No Bake Makery’s little bite sized desserts in flavors like Vanilla Honey, Coconut, and S’mores. And you’ve probably heard me rave about 61Local (pretty much every other week), but it’s because I love the bar’s concept. It’s a public house, and they are all about community and supporting local businesses.

Come by, bring some friends, enjoy some local flavor, and chat about what you love about this borough. RSVP here now.

Join the Local Roots NYC Supper Club.

22 Jan

In a food rut? Awaken your taste buds and try something new with my favorite CSA, Local Roots NYC. The group holds a supper club spotlighting chefs and local ingredients. On Wednesday February 1st, the group will host their third supper club with guest chef Matthew Leif of Landhaus. Held in the beautiful exposed brick mezzanine at 61 Local, this dinner sits 30 and will feature a four course menu with ingredients from the CSA’s  farms and other neighboring farms.

The star of the show will be the apple. Each dish will show the versatility and wide range of flavors of apples, one of the few fruits that are available in the winter season. The meal will include a starter, a first course, a main course, and a dessert. Get your tickets here for an amazing meal with some good company.

Welcoming 2012, Brooklyn Style

1 Jan

I welcomed 2012 in true Brooklyn style. A group of my Brooklyn-appreciating pals and I headed to Alma for a 3-course meal, margaritas, and plenty of prosecco. I enjoyed an ensalada, followed by a chile relleno stuffed with butternut squash and rice, and finished off with some caramel flan. My counterparts enjoyed paella, pork belly, filet mignon, and lots of churros. We ate and drink on the rooftop, overlooking downtown Manhattan.

After we were completely full, we headed over to 61Local, one of my favorite bars. The fab owner David introduced us to their latest offering– hard ginger ale. How do they make ginger ale hard? No, it’s not spiked, it’s actually made of fermented pineapple, which gives it a sweet taste too. In the usual new years eve style, the entire bar counted down to midnight, cheers-ing to 2012.

My Brooklyn New Years Eve Plans

29 Dec

I had a difficult time deciding at which Brooklyn spot I would ring in the new year. After careful deliberation, I picked Alma for dinner. With a $50 prix fixe and the ultimate rooftop dining experience, I knew it would be ideal for a new years eve celebration. The menu includes paella de Mexico, braised duck tacos, mexican churros with caramel sauce, and more delectable picks.

AFTER dinner, I’ll  be heading to one of my favorite bars of all time– 61Local. At midnight, they’ll be serving up some off-the-beaten-path fizzy stuff like hard ginger beer, hard apple cider, and a fizzy red blended from Red Hook winery in Brooklyn.

Sound good? Come out and join the party. And even if you can’t make it, I’ll be sure to post about the festivities here with plenty of pictures.
