The anticipation for a ramen place in Carroll Gardens was painful, so I was thrilled to come across an open door and a soft opening at Dassara Brooklyn Ramen. The homey space with exposed brick and two cozy rooms is still undergoing the opening transformation, but the front room offers bar seating, a few small tables, and a chalkboard menu. The soft opening offers a few small plates (“not ramen”) and two different kinds of ramen– mushroom and deli.
I started with the shishito peppers, which are served in a bowl with lightly fried fish and served with a couple sauces– a vinegar based and a mayo based sauce. I was a fan of mixing them a little. A little salty, a little sweet, a little tangy, a little spicy– the flavor combo and the mixed textures of the crispy fish and the peppers won me over. I ordered the mushroom ramen and received a big hearty bowl with a more noodles to broth combo, which I prefer. The noodles were accompanied by a heap of mushrooms and an oozy soft boiled egg. Rather than the salty broth I expect from ramen, it was deep and earthy, thanks to the mushrooms.
Bottom line: I can’t wait to go back to Dassara. I’m even more excited to see the full menu at the grand opening, which I heard will have a few more ramen varieties and a couple more appetizers– and hopefully for me more veggie/pescatarian options. Dassara is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood, and I ‘m sure I’ll be back in soon, if not this week.
