I wanted something to drink, and because I’m easily conned into buying overly priced, nicely packaged, glass bottled drinks, I purchased my first bottle of Kombucha. At first, I didn’t know what to make of it– it’s kind of fizzy, kind of sweet, kind of bitter, and had pieces of something floating in it. But now I keep buying it–guiltily forking over $5 a bottle.
So you can imagine my delight when I discovered “Kombucha Brooklyn,” my new favorite drink AND borough bottled up in one pretty glass. Kombucha Brooklyn (or KBBK) was first brewed out of a Williamsburg apartment in 2007. The owner, Eric Childs, was exploring alternative forms of medicine, and fell in love with Kombucha’s healing properties. Now, KBBK is shipped all over New York. I bought mine at Choice Market in Dumbo, but its also available at other places like Union Market, Life Thyme, Park Slope Food Co-Op, and others.
Some of you are probably wondering, “What is Kombucha?” It’s basically a Chinese fermented tea that supposedly has heals and detoxifies the body, although there is no scientific evidence backing that up. I suggest trying it– but if you do, definitely go for the KBBK brand, it tastes better than other brands I’ve tried. Maybe it’s the Brooklyn flavor?
